McIntosh & Roose

In McIntosh's article, White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack and The Male Privilege Checklist, she argued "...men's unwillingness to grant that they are overprivileged, even though they may grant that women are disadvantaged" (McIntosh). I think that this statement is true, now I'm not saying all men are the same, but I have noticed from my own experience that some make it seem like their sex is more superior. Her main point is that white and male privilege is real and she even discusses the daily effects of white privilege. Some daily effects that she's shared on her article that I've noticed from my experience as well are, "I can turn on the television or open to the front page of the paper and see people of my race widely represented" (McIntosh). This is still a huge issue in our society where people get discredited because of the color of their skin. McIntosh shows the reality of racism by the argument she provides about how her whiteness puts her at an advantage, whereas those of color are put at a disadvantage. Growing up in a society where racism still exists, blows my mind.

Moreover, McIntosh's argues about how male privilege is real and that us women are looked at as being weak compared to the opposite sex. Also that we are suppose to stay at home and take care of the children while the men are assumed to be the breadwinners. She uses The Male Privilege checklist as a way to help men open their eyes, this list is not meant to victimize women but instead to help let it be known that male privilege is real.  I think that McIntosh made a strong argument that I can agree with and successfully stood her ground.

In addition to McIntosh's first argument about white privilege, Kevin Roose's argues something similar, that saying "all lives matter" is leaving people of color out and ignoring the real issue. By just saying "all lives matter" you're leaving out people who may be underprivileged and who struggle more than middle class people do. Roose shares his opinion about the saying "all lives matter" and basically is saying that the Black Lives Matter movement should get more recognition. I fully agree with Roose's argument and I think that us individuals should focus more on the Black Lives Matter movement and bring more attention to these social issues. Kevin Roose really made me see from his perspective and opened me up to new ideas and social issues that I was never aware of until now.

  3. Your points resonate with me, especially as I watched the testimonies from Dr. Ford and Mr. Kavanaugh yesterday. The entire justice committee, the ones voting about whether to put forward Mr. Kavenaugh for a vote is entirely white and male. What would the conversation be like if the committee was more diverse?
